Captain America: Winter Soldier – A must read

Captain America: Winter Soldier was an instant classic. It featured a more agressive Captain America and the story was a dark one with covert operations and black ops. But the best of all was the resurrection of none other than Bucky Barnes. The famous sidekick back in the early years of Captain America.

There was a saying in the comicbook community: Uncle Ben stays dead, Bucky stays dead and Jason Todd stays dead. But writer Ed Brubaker managed to revive Bucky with a great story.

Winter Soldier synopsis

For more than fifty years, the Soviets employed an undercover agent – an unstoppable, untraceable killer known as the Winter Soldier. His suspected identity? Bucky Barnes, Captain America’s one-time partner, thought to have died in World War II. Now, the Winter Soldier is back, working for the ruthless General Lukin – who has obtained a functional Cosmic Cube, a weapon of limitless power that can bend reality itself. Vowing to end Lukin’s reign of terror and destruction, Captain America relentlessly tracks the Cube – only to find himself face to face against the Winter Soldier.

My thoughts about the book

Back when I started to read the comic, I was almost immediately in awe of the comic. The dark storylines with elements of covert ops and the mystery revolving the Red Skull caught my attention almost immediately.

The comics deal with corporate espionage, covert ops and has guest roles from Iron Man, Falcon and Nick Fury. And last but not least: The Cosmic Cube.

The Cosmic Cube is an item that can control matter and energy, answering to the will of the sentient beings that use them. They require practice to be used properly, but a skillful user can alter all reality to answer to its thoughts, granting anything they desire. It is an incredibly powerful artifact and I am quite surprised that we haven’t seen it yet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet.

The entire build up to the big reveal about who the Winter Soldier really was, was tense, dark and confusing. Because you see Bucky but he isn’t Bucky. He is a brainwashed soldier who is only allowed to get out of cryostasis for special missions.  High valued targets who form threats to Russia at the height of the Cold War.

With the Winter Soldier, Marvel managed to reboot and propel Captain America into the modern age.

Captain America: Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a 2014 superhero film, based on the Marvel Comics superhero of the same name. It is the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers, and is the ninth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the third installment of Phase Two. The film was released on March 26, 2014, internationally and on April 4, 2014, in the United States.

After the first Avengers movie where our heroes defeated Loki, the Avengers split up. Thor went back to Asgard, Iron Man goes back to running his company.

Captain America however has nowhere to go. His life is all about being a soldier so it makes sense that he ends up in service of SHIELD.

The movie introduces The Falcon and a big role is given to Black Widow. Black Widow can be seen as the counterpart of Captain America.

Captain America has always held truth, justice and the American way in high esteem while Black Widow just basically lies about everything she does. From creating undercover identities to infiltration missions.  It makes for a fun dynamic in the movie. Comes with that, that Captain America has been in the ice for 70 years and the world he wakes up to has changed a lot.

So he has to adapt to the new world and deal with the fallout of America winning World War 2 and the consequences of that.

Ofcourse, other elements come into play like having SHIELD being infiltrated by Hydra and the supposed death of Nick Fury.

The Captain America: Winter Soldier movie is one of my favorite movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie features one of the best opening scenes in a movie ever. And, in my opinion, the best opening of a Marvel movie ever.
